Guevara Signs for Soccer at Murray State in Tishomingo

Madill senior Jimena Guevara celebrated Wednesday signing with Murray State College for soccer.

Guevara said it was a great idea to start her soccer career at a higher level close to home to be near friends as to why she chose Murray State.

Guevara said playing football helped her as an athlete.
”I think it helps me a lot to be more confident in myself, like believe in myself more,” Guevara said about being the kicker on special teams. “It will help me with my soccer skills.”

This winter, she added wrestling to her resume.

“My goal for wrestling is to hopefully get to make it to state for wrestling,” Guevara said.

“Jimena’s an unbelievable athlete,” Madill athletics director Brett Weiberg said Wednesday at the signing ceremony. “You know I saw some amazing things in the fall and then I know how good you (Jimena) are in soccer, too.”

“I think they (Murray State) are getting a really, really good student-athlete in Jimena,” Weiberg said.

“Jimena has been the rock for the Madill Soccer Program. She started as a Freshman and has grown to become a great goalkeeper. She excels both on and off the field. Jimena is the type of athlete you love to have on your team. She is dedicated, coachable, hard-working and relentless on her effort to improve her craft. Her leadership and commitment to the soccer program will be greatly missed by the players and the coaches,” Madill soccer head coach Jose Cortes said.
“Murray State is getting an athlete who does not know how to fail. Someone that will be relentless on the pursuit of excellence. Someone that will be an excellent teammate, who will always put the team first.”

Guevara served as the goalie for the girls soccer team last season. She played football this year for the Wildcats.

"Jimena (Guevara) was an awesome addition to our football team. She put a lot of time and effort into kicking and did a great job!" Madill football head coach Chad Speer said.  "So glad she chose to play her senior year."

Guevara was selected as the Madill football club's special teams most valuable player for the Wildcats following the conclusion of the season this November. Guevara also leads the band at halftime as a drum major on the field.

“Jimena has been our rock of consistency as our drum major the past 3 years. She leads by example, and she is not afraid to put in the time and effort for the good of the group. She encourages other through adversity and accepts criticism and critic well. She is humble and  approachable,” Madill band director Kendal Hasty said. “Her leadership style is the epitome of what I look for in a drum major. Jimena as well as our other seniors will have a lasting impact on our program and are helping build our own tradition of Excellence.”
